12. What if a Parent Asks Me A Question and I DO NOT Have The Answer?

This is one of the most fearful situations for a beginning teacher. We each faced this numerous times in our teaching career and had a laugh about it..... only because we know that feeling!

YOUR RESPONSE:

1. Recognise and validate the question.

"That is a great question."

2. State that you are going to seek more experienced advice on the best strategy / resolution.

"Is it ok with you if I write down your question and take it to my lead teacher who is much more experienced in this area and get back to you next week?" OR "I think further research in the best solution/strategy is the next step. Can you give me a week [name your appropriate time frame] so I can seek the most viable solution and we can go from there?"

3. Invite them to have input.

"Do you have any suggestions that you would like me to review with my team?" OR "Is there something you had in mind?"

INCLUDING the parents in paramount at this point of the conversation and seeking support / advice from your peers is most important. Being transparent with the parents will build rapport and a solid partnership with them, helping you feel more confident as a professional and teacher!
